The hand and the eye
The exhibition "The Hand and the Eye", which opened at Tselinny Temporary public space presented works by Rustam Khalfin and Lida Blinova, as well as a documentary film directed by Saule Suleymenova and Suinbike PULOTA. LIDIA BLINOVA. The exhibition project was related to the publication of the essay Living Plexuses («Живые сплетения») by art historian Nazipa Ezhenova as part of the Tselinny Publishing programme.
Lida Blinova is one of the founders of contemporary art in Central Asia, a wife and teammate of Rustam Khalfin. She is an actionist and author of performances mostly shown in unofficial exhibitions. Lida's photo-installation "Finger Ornament" participated in the exhibition "Parade of Galleries" at the Abilkhan Kasteev State Art Museum in 1995, and was a part of many international expositions.
Rustam Khalfin is one of the first local artists to engage in performance, installation and video art, reinterpreting nomadic arts through a contemporary artistic language. His works are represented in collections at the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Museum of Oriental Art, in the collection of Soviet nonconformist at the Zimmerli Art Museum in New Jersey, the Moscow House of Photography and many others.
Living Plexuses is an essay about the most important period of the formation of Kazakhstani contemporary art and a personal look at the main participants of those events. The documentary nonfiction book with Rustam Khalfin and Lida Blinova as main characters collects facts and events witnessed by the author, and represents a vivid interweaving of art and life, people and books, occasional meetings and fateful events, through the author’s personal prism.
