The Open Archive — Almaty

In autumn 2018, the Tselinny Center for Contemporary Culture opened with The Beginnings, a three-part large-scale exhibition project. Panels and screens installed at the site of the former cinema theatre provided images of the architecture of the 1960s to 1980s. This part of the project is based on the research of architectural historians in cooperation with the Garage Museum of Modern Art, Yuri Palmin, a photographer, and the Almaty architectural community. An architectural look of the city was formed, among others, by Vladimir Katsev, a prominent architect of the city, linking it to old Almaty. Vladimir Katsev was the author and chief architect of the Baluan Sholak Sports Palace, the Medeo high-altitude speed-skating rink, the building of the Almaty Circus and other city facilities.
